My Top 10 Favorite Home Trends - 2022

I’ve taken in the votes cast by the trend watchers in home design - and identified own very favorite home trends for the new year.
Here are my impressions of the best to come in 2022!
Chairish Vintage Fitz & Floyd Greyhound (old) & Chelsea House – Blueberry Boxes (new)
Ye Olde Goodes (Wall Street Journal)
“As a person who likes to see new and old juxtaposed together, I am excited by this fresh interest in interiors with some implied history. Historical, heirloom, antique and vintage pieces give a room visual interest and depth. Supply chain challenges have a shining silver lining – the emergence of new appreciation for beautiful old things combined with modern pieces.”
East London Parasols
Outdoor Spaces (Architectural Digest)
“As a self-proclaimed ‘summer person’ – there is something especially satisfying I find by walking into an outdoor space that’s as comfortable as being indoors. Investment in outdoor spaces will increase with the addition of stylish, and durable outdoor sofas, tables, and benches. Rugs, cushions, pillows and umbrellas will be blooming with color (literally) – expect to see florals and tropical prints in 2022.”
Merinda Studio Wallpaper
Walls & Ceilings with Personality (HGTV)
“Though it does require a level of commitment different than paint… I say, if you are one of the brave, consider wallpaper. A space that is wallpapered expresses personality in a big way, even if it is just the interior of a bookcase or closet. Statement wallpaper and murals allows homeowners to express personality. If you are after more fun – look up and appreciate the ceiling as a 5th wall.”
The Cow Spot
Office Spaces Made Pretty (Veranda)
“When my children were small, I worked remotely from an office in our basement. Eventually, we moved my desk upstairs, put it in front of a window, and gave the room some personality. It was like coming out of darkness into the light – figuratively and literally. As work at home has become the norm for so many people, making your work space one that makes you feel optimistic and productive is a gift that you’ll appreciate every day. Windows to gaze out, special upholstery fabric, beautiful writing desks, colors that energize - and textures that comfort. If you work from home, don’t discount this space. It’s so important to your overall well-being.”
Petal Republic - Calathea
Plants (Elle Décor)
“Biphilic homes (a trendy word for association with nature) will be hugely popular in 2022. Indoor plants will abound, providing connection with nature, calm, freshness, and cleaner air. Potted plants, hanging plants, and living walls are all growing in popularity. If you are one of those people who can’t keep anything alive. (I used to be that person). Then these, my friends, may become your tried and true favorites as well: Jade plant (crassula ovata) , ZZ plant (Zamioculcas Zamiifolia), and rubber plants (Ficus elastica) and cathedral plants (Calathea).”

Fabulous Light Fixtures (House Beautiful)
“In the right light, at the right time, everything is extraordinary.” Aaron Rose.
“When clients’ identify their most favorite thing as the lighting for more than one reason, it’s design done well. The right light fixture is beautiful - and helps us focus on beauty around us. Lighting relaxes us, enlivens us, and focuses us. It makes us look good. Extraordinary sculptural pendants and sconces put the emphasis where it’s best. A fabulous light fixture provides ambiance. You’ll either wake up or cozy in. And – it is a piece of art no one can ignore.”
Highly Personal Spaces (House & Garden)
“I’ve had a few clients who have said, ‘just give me a pretty room.’ Trust me, you don’t want me to do that. If the things in your home don’t mean anything to you – then no matter how pretty, I guarantee you, tomorrow or the next day or the next month, you’ll walk into the room that you loved initially because it was so pretty, and you’ll realize that it doesn’t suit you somehow. It will feel very surface and pathetically shallow. Why? Because it was created without the most important ingredient – without a focus on the depth that is inside of YOU. It makes me so happy that appreciation for highly personal spaces that reflect the homeowner is growing.”
Sunbrella
Luxurious performance fabrics (Forbes)
“I know firsthand what it’s like to sweat watching someone sit down with a bowl of ice cream on our sofa. But – just last week, I was the one wearing the black hat. No one was at home, and I sat down on the sofa with a bag of Trader Joe’s dark chocolate covered pretzels… five minutes of heaven. When I stood up to fluff the pillows, half a bag later – Just guess. (I have no idea how that one got away.) Although I’ve intellectually believed all the hype about crypton fabric – It wasn’t until I actually saw my own sofa come clean (albeit with some scrubbing) when I breathed again and thanked my lucky stars for performance fabrics. You too can worry less about spills, wear and tear. Today’s performance fabrics endure dogs, babies, children, and lots of time at home. Available in chic textures like velvet, sherpa, boucles, and surprisingly luxurious indoor-outdoor fabrics - if you don’t have performance fabrics, either you don’t care about your furniture, or I’m pretty sure you don’t have peace of mind.”
France & Son
Curves (Luxe Interiors & Design)
“So, how does that line make you feel? Most of us see form, but seldom appreciate how it makes us feel. Curves psychologically help us feel connected to each other, comfortable, and at ease. We’ve seen curves in furniture and accessories before, although in 2022, expect to see heightened enthusiasm for curves, undulating lines, and organic forms. They are ideal for making spaces more conversation encouraging, intimate and friendly – eyes gravitate to the allure of curves.”
Massucco Warner
Color & Pattern (Veranda)
“An all-neutral room has its merits. I love a well-designed neutral room. Punches of color though, wake me up and keep my mind in the space it likes to be in. It’s easy to get discouraged if you let yourself settle too long and deep into grey or brown or tan. That’s why bold color is on the rise as color therapy for health and wellness – (and why God made flowers, in my estimation). Adding warm pinks and oranges turn up the notch on joy, while blues and greens will put you in the mindset of a being enveloped in a soothing, relaxing retreat. Mix them up for startling effects. Add pattern and texture… They play into the feeling you create.”
